The popular surgeon who delivered David Cameron’s daughter was allowed to keep practicing for twenty years in spite of multiple negligence claims.
Nicknamed ‘The Butcher’ by his colleagues, Dr Robert Jones was investigated for questionable practices at least nine times in twelve years. At least five of his patient’s developed an extremely rare complication called a fistula.
A review by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) called Dr Jones’ decisions ‘bizarre’ and criticized his communication and documentation skills. RCOG also called for a review of over fifteen hundred patients that had been in his care.
Claire Hill was one victim of Dr Jones’ negligence. Her first surgery was so severely botched that she was forced to undergo another surgery for a hysterectomy. She also developed a fistula and was incontinent for over year. Four additional surgeries were required to correct the errors from her first surgeries.
“My self-confidence went down,” said Mrs Hill. “I couldn't walk the kids to school because even though I was strapped to a catheter bag, I was flooding even with the catheter bag in."
Though Mrs Hill eventually recovered, she is left with lingering psychological trauma. She is currently one of several women pursuing a compensation claim for the surgical error.
Shockingly, the hospital allowed Dr Jones to continue to practice despite multiple negligence claims and payouts of over nine million pounds. The hospital also allowed Dr Jones to deliver David Cameron’s daughter after he had caused severe brain damage and death to other infants. When the Cameron’s returned the next year to offer him their thanks, he was treated as a hero.
Described as ‘charming’ by some and a ‘megalomaniac’ by others, Dr Jones’s personality seemed to win over his superiors in spite of numerous medical and surgical errors.
At least forty-five women are pursuing negligence claims against Dr Jones.
